Michitoshi Hayashi、Dr. Tatiana Yu Latychevskaia、Dr. Alois Renn、Prof. Urs.P.Wild等。

CYCU Hosts Chinese Chemical Society’s 2003 Annual Conference
–Nobel Laureate Dr. Lee Yuan-Tseh Delivered a Speech
Reported by Lin Hung-Chou
Chinese Chemical Society’s 2003 Annual Conference was held at Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU) from November 28th to 30th. Many scholars and friends from chemistry-related industries attended the conference. The 71st anniversary meeting opened at 9 a.m., November 29th at CYCU’s Concert Hall. Among the honorable guests that attended the conference were the president of Academia Sinica Dr. Lee Yuan-Tseh, Taoyuan County Commissioner Chu Li-Lun, the president of CYCU Dr. Hsiung Shen-Kan, and Dr. Chen Yu-Hui, vice-president of CYCU. This year’s annual conference was hosted by CYCU’s Department of Chemistry, with Dr. Chen Yu-Hui heading the Directorate Committee to the conference. Dr. Lee Yuan-Tseh, Nobel Laureate of the 1986 Chemistry Award, delivered a speech entitled “Forty Years’ Endeavor on Chemical Dynamics.” In addition to Dr. Lee’s speech, there were also quite a few papers read by the participating scholars, with many others posted on walls as part of the exhibition. Other activities included the selection of distinguished papers penned by graduate students, female chemistry scholars’ seminars, as well as exhibition of books, instruments, and drugs. More than 1600 honorable guests from the academia and private chemical sectors gathered together at CYCU where they shared with one another their new findings.
In his speech, director of the Chinese Chemical Society, Dr. Wu Cheng-ching, said that over the past 71 years the Society has been dedicated to boosting chemical infrastructures, cultivating talents, and actively hosting and participating in various kinds of international scholarly conferences. The society has contributed not only in boosting our nation’s competitive edge but also in enhancing Taiwan’s international exposure. Dr. Hsiung, the president of CYCU, pointed out in his speech that CYCU set its sight on becoming a research-oriented university with a focus on holistic education. CYCU, he said with a metaphor, would like to encourage its students to metamorphose—as if through a chemical transformation—into a so-called “new, new generation” of young people who will live by faith, hope, and love.
There was an awarding ceremony in the conference. Seven awards were given to distinguished scholars and workers in chemical-related industries. Dr. Chau Kuei-jun, professor of the National Tsing Hua University, won the 2003 Academic Chemical Research Award. The award for Distinguished Service in Chemistry went to Prof. Lin Cheng-Tung of Tung Hai University. Wang Hsin-hsin, who now works as a researcher at the Department of Chemical Engineering of Industrial Technology Research Institute, won the Chemical Technology Award. Prof. Y. S. Hon of the National Chung Cheng University and Dr. Chang Chun-ping won the Chemical Research Paper Award. The Society’s Distinguished Research Paper Award went to Prof. Cheng Yi-tsung, Dr. Liang Guo-gang, Dr. Chang Ta-Chao, Dr. Chang Chung-hung, Dr. Hsu Ruei-hung, Dr. Lin Shan-shian (of Acadimia Sinica), Dr. Michitoshi, Dr. Tatiana Yu Latychevskaia, Dr. Alois Renn, Prof. Urs.P.Wild.
There is another thing worth mentioning. The host made a special effort to invite Dr. Lee Yuan-tseh to give awards to the winners of the qualifying contest to the 35th International Chemical Olympics. The reputed chemistry master gave the awards to these young scholars, symbolizing the inheritance of the past and initiation of the future in chemical studies. When the four winners–the gold medallist is Lu Yi-tsong from National Taichung First Senior High School—received the awards from Dr. Lee, their faces were beaming with excitement.
According to the Department of Chemistry, the host arranged a seminar exclusively reserved for female chemistry scholars. The National Science Council’s Chemical Research Promotion Center also organized a seminar on core curriculum in the field of chemistry. In order to encourage young scholars to devote themselves to the study of chemistry, a contest was held to select the best research papers penned by graduate students. It is hoped that the innovation and energy brought in to chemistry will enliven Taiwan’s chemistry studies.
